After completing my Psychology Honours, I received a Masters Degree in Play Therapy. During my work in private practise it came to my attention that there were many children who were suffering from trauma (due to abuse, bereavement and exposure to violence) who were not receiving any counselling due to financial constraints. Hero (Heal, Equip, Restore, Optimise Strengths) was therefore registered as an NPO in 2011, with the principal aim of providing therapy to traumatised children from sub-economic communities and to assist and support their families. Having worked in the Primary Schools for many years, the Hero team was well equipped to work with the children affected by the fires on June 7th. Over 150 children have received group therapy, and follow-up individual sessions will continue as long as there is a need.
