Knysna Arts Gallery, Old Goal Complex, Queen Street

The Knysna Art Society was first formed over 50 years ago. Early meetings were held in the “Art Centre” in Montague Street. The screens were wheeled down the street to St George’s Church Hall where the first Annual Art Exhibitions were held.
When the Old Gaol became vacant, the Art Society applied for and were given a section for a Gallery. All renovations had to be paid by the Society. An appeal was launched and the generous public of Knysna donated the necessary funds. Today the Arts Society has some 300 members. It organizes exhibitions for members annually, also an exhibition for all the 17 schools in Knysna. The gallery is let out to artists in available periods between these exhibitions. Demonstrations, workshops, and lessons are also organised through the Society for members.

Get yourself to this event. It is a revival, reinvention, renewal. The re-opening of the Knysna Art Gallery at The Old Gaol complex on Queen Street is this coming Tuesday 20th Feb at 6pm.
The Knysna Art Society under its new committee and chairman Ricardo L. van Lingen will be hosting their first exhibition titled UNBLOCKED. The new committee was appointed late November last year and this exhibition is one of the first steps they are taking to revive and stimulate the once strong art community and culture in Knysna.
Each member of the Art Society was invited to purchase one or more blocks, a 22x22cm wooden square, and art. There was no mandate other than to be completely creative and to think out of the block. On Tuesday at 6pm over 150 blocks will be up on display and for sale.
You are invited, please join us to see Knysna unBlocked.
